We are fortunate to work with many organizations and programs that advocate on behalf of children, birthparents, and adoptive families. In honor of National Adoption Month, we have taken the opportunity to highlight just a few of the many important programs serving youth in foster care, orphaned and vulnerable children, expectant parents considering adoption, and adoptive families.
Today we spotlight America's Christian Credit Union!
Throughout the adoption process, families receive an array of support services to prepare them for welcoming their child into their family. One crucial support is funding, as adoption is often a large financial commitment for adoptive parents. America’s Christian Credit Union (ACCU) provides crucial funding for families and since 2009, over 600 families have been helped through their work. America’s Christian Credit Union is a full-service financial institution that offers special adoption financing for families through their Adoption Loan Program. Through the Program, ACCU has partnered extensively with nearly 100 local and national agencies, removing obstacles for families seeking adoption. ACCU offers adoption grants to its members to help with the high cost of adopting. Adoption loans often work as bridge financing until other sources of income arrive. This allows for the prospective parents to begin the process of adoption prior to receiving other sources of funds. ACCU looks at the person’s complete financial portfolio to find the best financing solution for the family. Payment plans can be tailored to each borrower’s specific needs and circumstance.

Several families have benefitted greatly from ACCU’s loan program, providing them with the opportunity to form a loving family through adoption. Many parents, such as the Moon family, who adopted a baby boy, have immense gratitude for ACCU. “ACCU gave us a significant loan last year for the adoption of our son, Judah. Without it we would not have been able to complete his adoption. We are so, so grateful.” Similar sentiments are heard from many other families who all give great credit to ACCU in being able to start their family. One particularly heartwarming story is that of the Chandler family and their experience working with ACCU to secure funding.
When the Chandler family began their adoption process, they found that working with their agency became a much larger financial commitment than they anticipated. It included several hours in the car to and from interviews, orientations, meetings, potential matches, and more. Through their adoption agency, they were informed of America’s Christian Credit Union and their Adoption Loan Program. At first, the Chanders were skeptical. They had heard of many financial scams and felt California was a world away from their small Texas town. However, they had also been turned down for other grants and none of their local lenders would give them a loan without using their home or cars for collateral. After thoughtful prayer, they broke down and called America’s Christian Credit Union. Immediately, the Chandlers felt like they had known the staff at ACCU for years and were pleasantly surprised at how warm and friendly they were. Soon after calling, the Chandlers secured a loan from ACCU with what the Chandlers called, “a little more than our word and a handshake,” and they were able to continue their adoption journey. Through the process, the Chanders formed a relationship with staff at ACCU and were continually provided with help and suggestions for services. They were able to work with the same person the entire time and felt as though the experience was very personal. On March 6, 2012, a baby girl was born and the Chandlers welcomed their new daughter into her forever family.

Adoption loans are available for adoptive parents at many stages of the adoption process. Recently, an ACCU family was in the process of adopting a pair of siblings from Uganda. While the family was completing the necessary paperwork for the brother and sister, the boy needed emergency medical treatment. The family was granted permission to bring the boy to the United States for help and they were able to get the needed funds quickly for the trip from ACCU. This is just one example of how important these loans are in order to save children and unite them with a loving family.

The impact of ACCU’s Adoption Loan Program is also felt by the adoption agencies working with families. One of ACCU’s partners, Mr. Tom Velie with New Beginnings International Children's & Family Services, had the following to share on their experience with ACCU: “I love what I see happening through the Adoption Loan Program at America’s Christian Credit Union. Children are uniting with their new families with ACCU’s help and it is a tremendous blessing for all concerned. Our families are treated with special care and we highly recommend them to the adoptive families we serve.”
ACCU is proud to help families in the adoption process and recognizes the impact the funding can have. With the future of the adoption tax credit remaining uncertain at this time, it may be more difficult for families to feel they are able to adopt. ACCU hopes to respond to that need with financial alternatives and education, as they believe it is crucial in overcoming obstacles to adoption. Leadership at ACCU believes in the adoption cause and has committed to do what is needed to help bring children into loving homes.
