Census 2000 Report On Adoption Shows that Adoption in America is Alive and Well

On August 22, 2003, the Census Bureau released Adopted Children and Stepchildren: 2000, a special report that provides useful data on adoptions in the United States. Among other findings, the Census report shows that in 2000, 2.5 percent of children living with their parents in America were adopted into their families; that 1.6 million children under the age of 18 living with their parents are adopted and, taking into consideration those children age 18 and older living with their parents, the number reaches 2.1 million adopted children living in 1.7 million households. NCFA’s analysis of the data concludes a marked increase in infant adoption since 1996, as well as continuing increases in foster care and intercountry adoptions.
