If you are facing an unintended pregnancy and trying to make decisions that will be best for both you and your child, adoption may be right for you.

This decision is a personal one. What may be right for one person may not be right for another. Before you make any decisions or make an adoption plan, it would be in your interest, and in the best interest of your child, to seek counseling. In many cases it is helpful to receive objective input from a trained professional, and to learn as much as you can about adoption. You will then be in a better position to make an informed decision about your future and the future of your child.

Where can I receive counseling?

One source of information is our iChooseAdoption.org educational website. Licensed adoption agencies can also provide counseling and other support services, and NCFA's member adoption agencies are excellent sources of information. You can also consult with your state's Adoption Licensing Specialist for the names of other licensed professional adoption agencies in your area.

A counselor should ask you questions to help in your decision-making process. Here are a few important issues to consider:

  • Can I handle a child and a job and/or school at the same time?
  • What thing(s) might I have to give up if I had a child?
  • Am I able to give my child the love he or she needs and deserves?
  • Am I patient enough to deal with the noise, confusion, and the 24-hour/day responsibility of parenting?
  • How would I ensure my child's health and safety?

It is also important to consider the adoption process itself. State laws govern the process of placing a child for adoption and adopting a child. These laws vary from state to state. To find out more about your state's adoption laws, click here.

If you are concerned about your privacy if you decide to place your child for adoption, please contact us to find out more about your state's laws regarding adoption privacy or confidentiality. We believe in and support your right as a birthparent to choose a confidential adoption if you so desire.
