The Adoption Awareness Act, passed by Congress in 2000, established federal funding to train pregnancy and health counselors to present adoption as an option to women with unintended pregnancies.
This legislation paved the way for NCFA's Infant Adoption Awareness Training Program (IAATP), which was launched when we were named the original recipient of the federal training grant in 2002. From 2002 to 2005, we provided adoption education and awareness training to "options counselors" in all fifty states as part of the IAATP. Since 2006, as the grantee for Health Region III (which includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia), we have trained counselors as part of the newly updated and renamed Infant Adoption Training Initiative (IATI).
As an IATI grantee, we work in conjunction with other federal grantees to train health care workers and those involved in providing counseling and support services to those impacted by unintended pregnancy. We provide training to counselors working in federally funded family planning clinics, community health centers, and other public and private locations in Health Region III. These comprehensive training sessions enable counselors and others who come in contact with teens and those affected by an unintended pregnancy to make a fully informed choice. Since these workers and counselors are often the first professionals who meet with pregnant women, their ability to present all the options, including adoption, in a careful and caring manner is critical to the decision-making process.
IATI is a partnership that facilitates training and builds a corps of workers who are knowledgeable about adoption and able to answer questions about it accurately. In more than 2,000 training days since 2002, our IATI has trained over 19,000 individuals from all 50 states, 94% of whom rated the trainings "Excellent" and/or cited an "increase in knowledge" that has benefited them their work with clients and patients.
